The women s’ agenda has truly gained momentum, comparing it from the time of the Beijing conference to date, the gender agenda has been domesticated by most States that are members of the United Nations. This has brought about the presence of women in Governance structures and a platform of shared roles and responsibilities. With the aid of the CEDAW convention were State parties come to report on what they are doing in equalizing opportunities for women, women are at the helm of their careers and get equal attention on the job market as their male counterparts.
In view of this progress a certain negative trend has also developed, mostly advanced by men which could either be a reaction to the emergence of women s’ rights at a global level. The use of derogatory language to describe women in leadership is currently on the increase on most online news sites. It is becoming apparent that women in leadership are termed prostitutes, ugly, not as a fact but just a way of bringing these women s leadership in disrepute. This has become a worrisome trend, because it is showing worrying levels of violence which if not checked would deter women from taking active leadership roles. “Society should value people for what they aspire to and what they can achieve rather than how they look”.
